For years, it felt like Apple was ignoring pro users with its laptops. After the company’s ‘Unleashed’ event today, where the company unveiled the next-generation MacBook Pro, however, it’s clear that Apple is back on form — and cares about pro users more than ever.

When Apple last did a major refresh of the MacBook Pro, many felt that it was a disaster, including myself. The company ripped out all of the useful ports in favor of dongles, killed MagSafe charging as well as the SD slot, and introduced the butterfly keyboard alongside the Touch Bar, which frustratingly replaced the function keys.

Not only was the butterfly keyboard plagued with problems that Apple refused to acknowledge, the machine just didn’t fit many workflows like the old ones did — at least without investing in a plethora of dongles to make everything from your monitor to existing keyboard keep working.

It’s clear that the switch to USB-C ports was the right one, which Apple was years ahead of the competition on, but the company outright disregarded how people used their laptops, and assumed that carrying around bags of dongles to do anything wouldn’t frustrate even the most loyal users.
