Apple’s New MagSafe Battery Pack Isn’t Pretty, But I Bet You’ll Want It

I welcome the iPhone 12 battery hump

I’m obsessed with battery life, and I don’t think I’m alone. “ABC” or Always Be Charging” is a universal mantra.

On my iPhone 12 Pro, I’ve started switching to battery-saving mode well before noon. Not because I’m almost out of battery life, but I can’t stand to see the rapid slide of that black battery bar down past the halfway point if I don’t. A half-charged battery sends chills down my smartphone-loving spine. Never mind that it means I still have probably 4-to-6 hours (or more) of battery life. I go into a panic.

I still think the battery life on the iPhone 12 line is pretty good (surprisingly good on the iPhone 12 mini) but have noticed that as Verizon rapidly builds out their 5G network and I start leaving my home and neighborhood more often (thanks vaccinations!) I’m connecting at better, more battery-draining speeds more often.

According to Tom’s Guide, an Apple iPhone 12 Pro, which has just a 2,815 mAh battery (compared to the over 4K model of most Samsung Galaxy 20 S20 models), lasts roughly 9 hours on a 5G network. Over LTE, I’ve gotten close to 12 hours and on Wi-Fi, I’ve gotten even more.
