Thank you for this article. About 40 years ago I wandered into a Tulsa clock shop and came out with an ordinary wall clock; I imagined it might have served a family in a sod farmhouse many years before. Not much larger than a Kleenex box.

Great article. A particular bugbear of mine is kitchen scales. I have a beam balance scale, no batteries, will work for 100+ years, more accurate than an electronic scale (physics!).
Spring balances are good too, and maybe marginally more convenient.
