“The Kindle has made me more daring.”

Physical books, writes author Susan Orlean, have a sort of aura — a weight that goes beyond the paper and bindings. “That’s part of what makes them so appealing,” Orlean says, “they’re objects that have been designed and created to have a certain effect.”

But that also makes them static, heavy objects. So Orlean has migrated her reading over to Kindle, where she can pick up and give up on books without the physical, and moral, guilt of giving up on a physical book.

“I also love convenience, and backlighting, and simplicity, and I love not clogging up my life with stuff I don’t want but can’t throw away.”
